Winter Art Exhibit
Featuring artwork by
Caroline Erney and June Shutt

Caroline Erney, multi-award winner in a variety of media, earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Oberlin College in Ohio and her Master of Arts degree in Art from East Tennessee State University. She has done graduate work at several Pennsylvania universities and has studied at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina and the Mechanicsburg Art Center. For more than a score of years, she taught art at Camp Hill High School. Not only an artist, she also is a musician and a craftsperson. Many commercial establishments and private collectors have included her work in their collections. Her art hangs in galleries, not only in the Harrisburg area, but also in Chicago, Boston, Chadds Ford and Gettysburg. Caroline is a current resident of Messiah Village.

Caroline Erney explains the philosophy of her work by saying, "Children, animals or even time-weathered objects all have their own distinctive personalities and special stories to tell or reminiscences to evoke. I am charmed especially by children at play or in their own private world. I hope to capture their fleeting expressions of joy, the flow of movement or the serenity of a secret, special moment. Many of my ideas spring from recollections of my childhood, which was enriched by frequent family gatherings, games and stories from the past. I also utilize cherished memories of my three sons as they were growing up and current observations of my grandchildren."

June Shutt
"Ever since 6th grade, when my art teacher introduced us to 'The Old Masters,' I've wanted to learn to do oil painting," says June Shutt. In 1985, after her first child went off to college, she began painting with Ruth Whitman, a self taught artist. In the fall of 1988, she began painting under Ann Stutenroth who "gave me a passion for painting during the 18 years I was with her," says June. When she retired, her husband encouraged her to continue lessons. In September 2006, she took lessons from Claire Beadon Carnell at the Pine School Studio in Mt. Holly. "In these 3 years she has given me wings," June comments. June has shown her paintings in Lemoyne at the Art Association of Harrisburg's Exhibit, and was artist of the month in March at the Wesley U.M. Church. She was also the feature artist for October at the Dillsburg Public Library. June was juried into CALC (Carlisle Arts and Learning Center) in June 2009. She has been sponsored to paint a chair for the CHAIRity Event held at the Cumberland County Historical Society in Carlisle.

June and her husband, Marty have been married for 55 years and reside in Carlisle. They have 4 children, 5 grandchildren and 2 stepgrandchildren.
